WOMAN SHOT
IN CHRISTCHURCH STREET CHARGE AGAINST HUSBAND -CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 14. A charge of attempted murder was laid in Christchurch to-night against Francis Noel Harkness, a naval rating who is at present on leave, and whose address is 145 Southampton Street. The charge was laid after his wife, Joyce Allison Harkness, living at 407 Selwyn Street, had been admitted to the Christchurch ■ Public Hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred shortly after 1 o’clock this afternoon, at the corner of Southey and Colombo Streets. The police said to-night that the woman appeared to have been shot in the back. Soon after the woman had been shot, Constable C. B, Scannell, of Sydenham Police Station, apprehended the accused, when he was riding a bicycle, and took him to the Christchurch Central Police Station for interrogation. Mrs. Harkness’s condition was stated to-night to be satisfactory. Harkness will appear in the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow morning.
