“A GRIM PICTURE”
BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY.
(Rec. 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, February 14.
Absenteeism in British mines has risen from seven to 18 per cent, the highest figure recorded according to the Government’s monthly statistical digest. The “Evening News” says the digest presents a grim picture of Britain’s coal industry, revealing a falling output and an alarming drift of manpower. Pithead stocks at the end of the year were less than 2,000,000 tons compared with over 5,000,000 tons in 1939. In the eight months of 1945 the consumption exceeded the output.
