ANGLO-FRENCH AGREEMEN 1
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec 21. The intention of Britain and France to ensure independence for the Levant States is declared in the text of joint policy statements relating to the regrouping and withdrawal of troops from the Levant. Each Government also affirms the intention of doing nothing to supplant the interests and responsibilities of the othei in the Middle East, having full regard to the political status of the countries in question. One of the objects of the discussions at present proceeding at Beirut will be the fixing of an early date lor the beginning of the withdrawal programme. The’evecuation will include provision for the retention of sufficient forces to guarantee security until the U.N.O. decision on the organisation of collective secuiity in the Levant area. Britain and France will discuss the dispositions of troops with the Lebanese and Syrian Governments. ________
