CRIME IN BERLIN
BERLIN, December 19
Sixty-three members of the Hamburg police force, including 12 officers and 32 senior n.c.o.’s, have been dismissed during the .past few days because thev were previously connected with the Nazi Party. The vacancies will be lillecT by promoting existing members of the force who have clean records and installing, policemen trained in schools supervised by British police officers. Berlin’s crime record has improved rapidly since the Summer.' There were only 56 murders in November, compared with 123 in July. Cases oi rape are reported to have declined from 589 in July to eight in November. Theft, particularly armed robberies, however, has increased but largescale looting has declined considerably. . ... British Army and civilian cat drivers from yesterday must carry arms and. ammunition in the streets of Berlin after 9 p.m. An armed escort must accompany women drivers. , , The Hamburg radio has reported that the Berlin police swooped on Berlin night clubs last night and arrested 300 persons, many of whom were already wanted for a variety of offences. Large quantities of black market meat, eggs, wine, and spirits were found. TREATMENT OF JEWS. (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, December 20. Criticism abroad about the treatment of Jewish people in the British zone of Germany was unjustified and deliberately fabricated, said Mr. Hynd, in the Commons. A relatively small proportion of Jews remained in the British zone. They received the same treatment as other displaced people, and had priority over the German population. Their scale of rationing was above that the Germans received. Mr. Hynd denied, that people had been placed in Belsen. The fact was about*9soo Jews were accommodated nearby in brick barracks formerly occupied by members of the S.S. This was now run by the British Red Cross.
