TAXI-DRIVER’S LEGACY

50,000 DOLLARS FOR TALKING

NEW YORK, December 6.

John J. Brophy, Nev/ Jersey taxidriver, has just received the biggest tip eVer-—50,000 dollars (about £17,- ■ 000). It was given by one of his regular customers, Mr. E. L. Rupprecht, an executive of the vast E. L. Dupont de Nemours Company, be-

cause Brophy helped him “escape the boredom of talk about business, concerts, and the opera.” Mr. Rupprecht, who died recently used a taxi driven by Brophy at least twice a day, and frequently called in to see Brophy and talk about his “real interests”—football, boxing, and baseball. His will disclosed one-eighth of the estate had been left to Brophy, who was discharged from the Army last year.
