As a result of accumulated goods, mostly coal and timber, which were stored in sidings along the Otira line during the slips, a record tonnage of goods was railed through the Otira Tunnel yesterday from the West Coast. The amount, 4,700 tons, is the greatest to go through the tunnel on any one day since its opening in August, 1923. Mr. Parry announced to-day, that to enable war pensioners, a,nd social security, beneficiaries to complete their Christmas shopping in time, payments will be made earlier this month. Age benefits will be available for collection on or after Tuesday, December 18, and all other social security benefits, war pensions and war veterans’ allowances will be available from paying offices as. from Thursday December 20. Payment of unemployment and sickness benefits for the weeks ending December 22/29 and January 5 will be available in one amount in the week ending December 22.—P.A. After two days of comparatively cold temperatures at Greymouth, there was an improvement in "the thermometer reading this morning, the recording being 53 as compared with 48 and 46 yesterday and Thursday at 9 a.m. Only slight traces of the unseasonable snowfall on Wednesday evening remain on the Paparoa Range, but frosts were recorded yesterday at Ross and other southern districts. So far this month, Greymouth has not experienced one completely dry day, almost seven inches having been recorded in as many days. However, with. barometric pressure fairly high at 1020.4 this morning, indications for a fine weekend are good. “I am convinced after a full inspection of all the harbour works that a solution of the bar difficulties can be found,” said Mr M. C. Smith, Secretary of Marine, before his departure from Westport for Wellington. No stone would be left unturned by the Marine Department or by the committee until a permanent depth i of 30 feet or more had been re-estab-ilished on the bar, he said. It had happened befpre and could happen again. Once the report of the English Engineers, due in January, was to hand, no time would be lost in making a recommendation to the Government for the necessary harbour works to proceed. A special Christmas allocation of excess art union profits has been made, said Mr. Parry, to-day, announcing details of the distribution which totals £13,680. The amounts granted to charitable and other organisations performing useful community service range from twentyfive to one thousand pounds, the latter being for the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society. The Commandery in New Zealand, of the Order of St. John receives £750 and the Red Cross Society (for peace-time activities only) receives £lOO for each of its centres in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. —P.A.
