CYCLING

HOAD AND TRACK The outstanding performance at the weekly track meeting of the Greymouth Cycling Club last week was recorded by J. Alexander in winning the junior mile race off 120 yards. He was also a good second in the novice half-mile from scratch. He is only about 15 years of age, yet he holds his machine in a manner which is a lesson to some of the senior riders —very steady in a hard finish.

Good Performance: W. Gardner won the two-mile senior race off 140 yards and it was a good performance for he hung on well to defeat the virtual scratch man, . Cooper (60 yards), and R. Armstrong off 140 yards. Gardner appears to. be striking form again after a temporary lapse, in the road racing and he should have a good season on the track. More attention to speed off the mark would improve him.

Improving Rapidly: R. Armstrong is improving rapidly and recorded a second and a third in the senior races at the Park last week. These were his first placings for some time, but he is a good all-round rider on both track and road and is in only his second season.

Out on His Own: J. Cooper- is unfortunately situated as far as Grey district cycling is concerned as he is really in a class on his own and with no one good enough to be put back with him he has to give away big starts and do all his own hard work. He rode particularly well last week to be second in the two-mile and Win the scratch race of two miles, with 12 lap points. He should not have much trouble in winning the points aggregate for the season if there is to be a scratch race at every meeting.

Newcomer: ‘J. Carr, formerly of Christchurch, is expected to take his place in the Grey district fields at an early date. He rode well from a middle mark in Canterbury and should be an acquisition to the Grey Club. He will add to the increasingnumbers of riders in the club' which is increasing in popularity. There were 14 starters in both the senior races last week.
