PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW [SPECIAL TO “STAR."] CHRISTCHURCH, November 23. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting will be opened at Riccarton to-morrow, when the chief events will be the New Zealand Victory Cup, the Welcome Stakes, and the New Zealand Derby Stakes, and the Stewards’ Handicap. The Cup field cannot be considered as strong in quality as in many previous years, but it is at least well-bal-anced, and investors will not have an easy task in selecting the favourite division. Longsword has been set a severe task with 9.6, and although his performances have been good enough to put him on such a high pedestal, he may not be capable of mastering the big ordeal set him. Piccolo’s position as No. 2 on the card was earned by his win over a mile and a half at Trentham. He has done well since, and provided he is well handled, he must be difficult. Signal Officer has been in strong demand for some weeks past, but since coming to Riccarton has suffered from soreness, and there was a doubt about his. being started. Golden Souvenir will probably be one of the first choices as fee race he had at Motukarara did him a power of good, and his winding-up gallop yesterday was very encouraging. Lance Wing has not been included in pre-race discussions, as it was thought he would be reserved for the Riccarton Handicap, but he is to start, in. the Cup. He lias had a thorough preparation, and may spring a surprise. Langue d’Or gave a good Cup trial at Otaki last Saturday, and the journey should not trouble him. Palfrey has proved he can master two miles, but it is doubtful if be is good as two years ago when he ran a close fourth. Sir Bian will carry plenty of Auckland support. He last month won the Mitchelson Cup, a mile and a half, in a decisive manner, and has attracted notice by his work at Riccarton in the past week. Fortune’s Smile has done well, and his second to Longsword at Trentham last month pointed to his prospects at Riccarton. Of the remainder, Broiefield is expected by North Islanders to take part in the finish. Sing Sing and Pride of Mossburn are a strong Southland pair, and the former is likely to be seen to better advantage than in the Southland Cup last Saturday, when Pride of Messburn had an easy win. Authentic is certain to be regarded as a lightweight place possibility, and there will be some support for Honest Sal, who has had a sound preparation for the event. STEWARDS HANDICAP.

Pensacola is a doubtful starter in the Stewards’ Handicap unless rain falls in the meantime. Reorapa, Master Dash, Sweet Biscuit, Irish Note, Verdant, Lord Advocate and Tuis comprise a formidable team of proved sprinters and then there are Deprive, Theiolyn, Whitley and Nurnie, all capable of taking prominent parts in the running. The pace will be on from the outset, and there should be an interesting dispute for pacemaking between Reorapa, Whitley, Nurnie, Tuis and Master Dash. Riding engagements: L. J. FINAL GALLOPS. CHRISTCHURCH, November 22. Conditions were favourable for the final gallops at Riccarton this morning. Times generally were fast, but they were aided by a nor’-wester which reached gale force at times. Tuis created a good impression by doing better than Irish Note throughout half a mile in 48 2-ssec. Lord Advocate and Reorapa were mates over five furlongs in 1.1 4-5, the last four in 49 2-ssec, with Reorapa a neck in front at the post. Benbecula was kept in restraint in running six furlongs in 1.16 2-5/the last four in 51 3-ssec. Royal Rae and Bruce were abreast throughout six furlongs in 1.18 4-5, the last four in 53 l-ssec.

Theiolyn and Sweet Biscuit galloped five furlongs in 1.1 1-5, the last four in 49 3-ssec. Deprive and Burberry ran the same distance in 1.2, the last four in 49 4-ssec. Verdant took 1.3 2-5, the last four in 49 4-5 sec.

Golden Souvenir was a . neck in front of Chung Chong, with another neck to Sir Bian, at the end of a mile in 1.45 1-5, the last four in 51 3- Golden Souvenir was again very impressive. Gigli beat Royal Victor over a mile in 1.44, the second half in 51 3-ssec. Authentic and Capronella were sent from the mile post and were joined by Chicago near the sevenfurlong post, the trio finishing together in 1.42 4-5, the first half in 51 2-ssec. Piccolo was two lengths in front of Vafort after leaving a mile behind in 1.43 4-5. the second four in 51 3-5 sec. Pride of Mossburn and Sing Sing were companions over a mile in 1.41 4- the first half in 51. 2-ssec. FAST TIMES. The fastest time over a mile was recorded by Lance Wing, which was one of the first to work after the gale sprang up. He ran the first half in 49sec, and completed the journey in 1.40 2-5. Lance Wing’s stablemate. Royal Chance, ran a brilliant seven in 1.27 1-5, the last four with the wind in 49 4-ssec. There were some smart half-mile tasks during the morning. Gaystock recorded 48sec and Palm Bearer was a length in front of Indira in 48 3-5 sec. Blue Trout was restrained to record 49 2-ssec, and Keening drew away from Royal Tan and Julius Caesar nearing the post in 50 3-ssec. - Signal Officer, who showed signs of lameness after working on Wednesday, was restricted to half-pace work.'
