FOUR ROOM HOUSES
MADE ON ASSEMBLY LINE Illustrating the speed with which Canadian industry is able to make the transition, from war to peace production, an aircraft company . in Montreal —until recently an important producer of combat planes—is ready to begin assembly line construction of four-room houses, states a Canadian trade journal. As domestic needs are met it is hoped to offer these factory-built homes in export. Built with an aluminium shell by a subsidiary ok' the aircraft firm, they have the appearance of an attractive, conventional bungalow. After* delay due to difficulty in gettinug adequate supplies of materials, production was' expected to be at the rate of six or seven complete houses per day during July. Initial selling price is 3300 dollars at the factory. The framework .will be spruce and the exterior aluminium sheets, fabricated from aluminium “clapboards.” These will be painted as automobiles or aeroplanes are painted at the factory, with a finish that will stand up under any kind of weather. Between inner and outer walls will be an insulating air space with three inches of fibre glass insulation. The inner’ Avails will be gypsum wallboard.* Plumbing and electrical installation will be completed and tested at the plant. The first type of house to be built, which can be set up in 12 hours, will be 24ft 7in by 28ft. and will consist of living-room, kitchen, with dinette space, two bedrooms, bathroom, vestibule, and service entrance. There is provision for adding more rooms. It is expected that other models will be offered later. „ „ All that is required of the purchaser is the provision of a foundation, either foundation posts or the preferred excavated cellar. The completed house, when prepared for shipment by truck or flat car from the factory, will make a “package’ 28 ft long, 10ft wide, and Bft high.
