Complaining of bad accommodation on the Dominion Monarch, which arrived at Sydney to-day from New Zealand, Australian servicemen said that when they went aboard they made it quite clear that they were not going to do the ship’s work, and they were not asked to do it. “However, there was trouble with the New Zealanders,”. said a former Australian prisoner. “They were ordered to polish the rails and stairs and sweep the decks. They refused, and stuck together. They said it was the crew’s job. Some of them were put in gaol, but they didn’t do the work.” SENTENCEREMISSIONS. . CANBERRA, October 5. To mark the formal surrender of Japan, the Governor-General, the Duke of has • granted clemency towards offenders- -against the laws of the Commonwealth and its territories, Mr. Chiflley announced in the House of Representatives, to-day that, for members of the Armed Forces, the remission will be 14 days in their sentences up to 56 days. For sentences in excess of three months, the remission is at the rate of 14 days for each period of three months. For civilians, the remission will be on a basis of approximately one-seventh of the' sentences of three months or more.
