To mark the formal surrender of Japan, the Governor-General, the Duke of has • granted clemency towards offenders- -against the laws of the Commonwealth and its territories, Mr. Chiflley announced in the House of Representatives, to-day that, for members of the Armed Forces, the remission will be 14 days in their sentences up to 56 days. For sentences in excess of three months, the remission is at the rate of 14 days for each period of three months. For civilians, the remission will be on a basis of approximately one-seventh of the' sentences of three months or more.
