Miss M. Barlow left this morning for Wellington. Sergeant-Airman R. Roche left, this morning, for Christchurch. L.A.C. N. McKnight, who has been on service in the Pacific area, returned to Greymouth on Thursday. A London cablegram stated that the U.S.A. Ambassador (Mr. Winant) left by air on a short visit to the United States. ■ • :r* The engagement is announced of Nancye Lenore, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Tucker,- Greymouth, to James Stewart, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Nimmo, Cobden, The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Flight Lieutenant K. A. Rutherford, whos_e father is Mr L. A. Rutherford, of Hawarden., He served with the Royal Air-Force in j the South-east Asia theatre.—P.A. . A London cablegram stated that Mrs C. H. Upham, wife of the winner of the Victoria Cross and bar, Brigadier N. S. Falla and Mrs.Falla, and Sir Henry and Lady French are sailing for New Zealand -some time this month in the Port Phillip. Captain H.. Williams, Area; Staff Officer, Area Nine, who , is retiring from the Army after 34 s ' years’ service, was farewelled by members of the staff of the Army Department, Greymouth, and was presented with a gold nugget tie pin. The presentation was made by Captain A. R. Curtis.

H.M.N.Z.S. Gambia, according to advice received in Greymouth, lately visited Wagiama, about 200 miles south of Tokio, and assisted in the evacuation of a number of prisoners. Among the prisoners moved were two West Coasters, Mr. F. Wallace, of the P. and T. Department, formerly of Greymouth, and Mp J. Jones, of Waiuta, both of . whom had been in cantivity for some'considerable time.

The death occurred at .Hokitika this morning after a lengthy illness of Mrs. Ellen Margaret King, wife of Mr. Alex. King, of Beaiey-' Street, Hokitika. She was born at Ahaura and was 61 years of age. She had lived at Hokitika for 30 years. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Ron (Greymouth), Alex. (Cobden) and Arthur (R.N.Z.A.F.) and one daughter, Miss Muriel King (Waiuta) < The funeral will take place at Ahaura on Monday.

Two American officials arrived at Auckland from San Francisco yesterday to take up posts at the United States Legation in Wellington. They are Dr ; Carroll Daugherty, economist and industrial writer, who will join the Foreign Economic Administration Mission in New Zealand as assistant to the United States Minister and special adviser to‘the administration, and Mr O. S. Watson, who will be commercial attache to the Legation in place of Mr Basil Dahl, who has been transferrred to Washington.—P.A.
