' The funeral of Mrs. Agnes; Mawhiney, of Cobden, took place this morning at Karoro Cemetery. Rev. Father McCarthy celebrated Requiem Mass. Rev. Father J. Long conducted the service at the graveside. Captain W. A. Todd, chief officer of the motor-vessel Hauraki, died in a prisoner of war camp in Japan in April, 1944. He was. born in Dunedin and was well known in shipping circles in New Zealand. He,was the elder brother of Captain D._- Todd, deputy-harbourmaster at Wellington. —P.A. Miss K. R. Kelly, who has been chief stenographer for the Armed Forces Appeal Board for the duration of .the Board’s operations on the West Coast, left this morning, via Nelson, on transfer to Wellington. Prior to her departure she was. farewelled by members of "the National Service Department, on whose’ behalf the Manpower Officer, Mr./G. G. M. Mitchell, made her a presentation of a silver powder bowl.

The death occurred at ' Burwood Hospital, Christchurch, yesterday, after a short illness, of Mr. John Milne. (Jack) Armstrong, of Ngahere. He was 58 years of age and was born at Brunner. He served 12 years in the Royal Navy including the period of the last Great War. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. J. Abbie and Mrs. R. Ramage (Cobden), Mrs. J. Webber and Mrs. A. Williams (Christchurch), and one brother, Mr. G. Armstrong (Ngahere). The funeral will take place at Christchurch to-morrow morning.
