FARMER FOUND DEAD. DANNEVIRKE, October 3. One of the best-known residents of Ti Tree Point, William Franklin, was found dead in his woolshed yesterday morning. He had been sharpening shearing machine cutters on a revolving grinder, and it is surmised that he fell against the grinder, suffering a deep cut in the back of the neck. MAN DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, October 3. Leslie Henry Jolly, an upholsterer, aged 35, of Harbour Road, was found drowned in the Styx River this morning. He was seen whitebaiting at 7 a.m. and shortly after a passerby saw his body floating among some weeds and sticks in the river. Ho was wearing a coat and gumboots. Jolly was married with three children. COUNTY'S HOSPITAL RATES WHANGAREI, October 4. The decision to invoke section 59 of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, 1926, in order that the Valuer-General may undertake the collection of hospital rates in the Mangonui County, has been taken by the Minister of Health (Mr Nordmeyer), according to advice received by the Mangonui Hospital Board from the Director-General of Health (Dr. Watts). p n This is the outcome of the refusal of the Mangonui County Council to strike a rate for hospital purposes for the year 1945-1946, following on similar action in the previous year, at the request of a section of the ratepayers, whose derating campaign was headed by district branches of the Farmers’ Union. Levies payable by the County Council to the Hospital Board for the current financial year amount to £8337. The implication oi the Minister’s action is that the hospital rate will be struck by the Valuer-General upon ratepayers. In the event of a refusal to pay, the Valuer-General would have power to employ legal process against, a defaulter, culminating in distress upon farm property, stock and chattels.
