HESS IN SECRECY
WELSH HOSPITAL GUARDED. September 3. Apparently the. authorities are determined to maintain the mystery which has surrounded Rudolf Hess ever since his dramatic arrival m this country in May, 1941. At the week-end, 10 extra, guards were placed on duty in the grounds of Maindiff Court Hospital, near Abergavenny (Wales), where Hess is a prisoner in a bungalow. The guards have orders to shoot to wound if they see anyone unauthorised in the grounds. Their arms include Sten guns and shot-guns. The gates at the entrance are secured with thick chains. All the 40 guards on duty at the week-end have been lectured on the “crime” of speaking about Hess in any way. Officers received another sheaf of directives on security measures concerning their prisoner. Meanwhile, pending his removal to Germany, where he will shortly be taken for the trials of the major war criminals, Hess is spending the time lolling on a bed, reading. Apparently the precautions .are designed to prevent pressmen from gaining any information about the man who today is the Number One Nazi. Several London dailies, have special correspondents stationed on the spot.
