WAR MUSEUM SUGGESTED

PICTURES AND RECORDS. A recommendation to the Government and the Returned Services Association that a war museum to house the records of the 1914-18 war and the war just ended should be established in Wellington is contained in the annual report of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, whicn was tabled, in the House of Representatives. The report states that there is, a large quantity of materials from the .first world war, works of official ar.tists, records and other materials, and these have been added to extensively during the second world war. They belong to a special category, many of them being of historic rather than aesthetic value, and it will be necessary to house them in some special building where they can be available to the public. The National Art Gallery has not sufficient space to house even a small portion of the pictures from the last war, apart from those from the present wari Further, these pictures should form part of the war museum collection. Most countries had a war museum apart from an art gallery, and such a museum would form a suitable memorial for the present war. Another suggestion was that the present art gallery and war memorial carillon would make an excellent wai’ museum, necessitating the provision of an art gallery elsewhere in Wellington.
