A New’ Delhi cablegram stated that 'President Truman has conferred the 'Legion of Merit on Lord Wavell and General Auchinleck.
A London cablegram stated that Lieut.-General Sir Sidney Kirkman has been appointed Deputy Chief of General Staff.
' The Greymouth Borough Council last evening congratulated the Toivn .Clerk (Mr. F. H. Denton) and Mrs. Denton and Acting-Wing Commander Frank Denton, on the last-named receiving a Bar to his D.F.C.
Mr Arthur Rayner, assistant manager of Bellamy’s, the Parliamentary restaurant, has been appointed manager of “The Lodge,” Hanmer Springs. Mr Rayner Avas formerly manager of the Wellington Club.
The funeral of Mr. John Nestor, of Kokiri, took place at Karoro cemetery on Wednesday, there being a large attendance. The service at the graveside Avas conducted by Rev. Father McCarthy.
The Minister of Mines (Mr Webb) Avho is on his Avay to the 1.L.0. conference at Paris, has arrived in Washington. Mr Webb is reported to have stood up to the journey Avell, but is receiving treatment lor his eye at a Washington hospital.
The funeral of Mr. John William Molloy, of Kotuku, took place at Karoro Cemetery this morning, being largely attended by friends and relations from the Otira line. Rev. Father V. Flaherty celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, and Rev. Father J. McCarthy conducted the service at the graveside.
Mr T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, will arrive on Tuesday to conduct a sitting of the authority in Greymouth. Mr J. S. HayAVOod, district officer of the Transport Department, will represent tne Commissioner of Transport, and Mr C. G. Rands Avill represent the Rehabilitation Department.

The death took place at Greymouth early this morning of Mrs. Mary Rooney, of Cobden. Born at Cobden 49 years ago, she was a daughter of the late Jasper and Mary Jefferies, and had lived in Cobden the greater part of her life. Her husband, Mr. Roy Rooney, predeceased her three years ago. She is survived by three sons, Paul (Army, Lyttleton), Vincent and Basil (Cobden), three daughters, Kathleen, Loretta and Ann (Cobden), one sister, Mrs. J. Walker (Cobden), and two brothers, William (Hokitika) and Thomas Jefferies (Cobden)'. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning, following Requiem Mass at Cobden.
