BOROUGH MILK SUPPLY

ESTABLISHMENT OF DISTRICT The Greymouth Borough Council decided at a meeting last evening to ask the Government to establish a milk district comprising, the Borough of Greymouth. A resolution to this effect was passed on the motion of the Mayor (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) and Cr. G. R. Harker following brief discussion .of a letter from the District Oil Fuel Controller, Mr. F. Mairs, who said that at a recent meeting of the Greymouth Milk Zoning Committee complaints regarding the shortage of milk during recent weeks were beiore the committee and the following resolution was adopted by the committee: “That the Greymouth Borough Council be recommended to request the establishment of a milk district and a milk authority for the Borough and its environs.”

Riversdale Dairy Supplies Avrote stating that they had secured a lease with an option of purchase of the building known as the West Coast Farmers’ Co-op. Dairy in Whall Street,-as a depot for the distribution of milk, but had found that the Council under the Town Planning code declared the area in which the building is situated a general commercial area with the building automatically debarred from the use for which it was specially designed and built. The assistance of the Council Avas sought in the re-establishment in the building of a milk processing business “which was closed under Emergency Regulations.” On. the recommendation of the Town Planning Committee it was decided that Messrs Riversdale Dairy Suoplies be permitted to use the building formerly occupied by . the West Coast Farmers’ Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd., in Whall Street, as a wholesale milk distributing centre provided that smokeless fuel only be used for any heating purpose and provided further, that the granting of this permission does not necessarily approve of proposals, with regard to milk supply, which will require to be I submitted Avhen a milk authority has been constituted.
