ATLANTIC’S “BLUE RIBBON”

TO BE DECIDED SOON LONDON, September 5. The old race for supremacy in the Atlantic will be revived when the control of shipping by united maritime authority ends in February. Britain, Sweden, and the United States are likely to be the principal competitors. Already these nations are making elaborate preparations for a renewal of peace-time passenger traffic. It is expected that in the first year Sweden will be in the lead, but that she will yield first place to Britain in 1947. In that year Britain will have a dozen large liners on the Atlantic run. It has been disclosed that the United States plans the construction in American yards of three more . luxury liners of the “America” type. The America is of 34,370 tons, with a speed of 20 knots. She was launched in 1939. United States shipping lines have been warned that sub-stratosphere planes are likely to take 40 per cent, of the former Atlantic traffic. Thus, with fierce competition pending, it is thought a sharp cut in fares is inevitable.
