RACING AND TROTTING
FORTHCOMING .FIXTURES.
Sept. 22: Geraldine, Sept. 22: Thames. Sept. 22: Foxton. Sept. 29: Hawke’s Bay. Sept. 29: Otago. Sept. 29: Ohinemuri. TROTTING September 29: Methven. October 6: New Brighton. October 13: Forbury Park. October 20, 22: Auckland. October 20, 22: Greymouth. October 22: Oamaru. October 27: Invercargill. One for Tattersail: G. Tattersail rode his first winner since his return from the war when he piloted Don Mac in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday. Don Mac, who is a four-year-old by Siegfried from Night Myth, is trained by L. Knapp at Awapuni. By Te Hero: Te Heroine, as her name suggests, is by Te Hero and she is a half-sister to Betterman. On the first day at Wanganui she was finishing on in sixth place, and on Saturday she was always near the front and took the lead at the distance.
Tumere; The Bulandshar three-year-old, Tumere, finished strongly in the first division of the Trial Handicap at Wanganui, and got to within a neck of the winner, Te Heroine. Tumere is from Black Cat and is owned by his breeder, Mr W. McA. Duncan, for whom he is trained by D. Marks.
Four Out of Seven: Belhall, trained by F. J. Smith at Takanini, has now won four races in her last seven starts. She is by Dillon Hall (imp.) from Goldflower by Gold Bell from Bellflower by Bellman, so she comes from a good line. As she won in 4.29 1-5 on Saturday from a 4.43 mark she should win a few more before the end of this season.
Confirmed: Emulous confirmed the good things that have been said about him when he won and was also placed third in another race at Auckland. The Jack Potts horse was unlucky on the second day at the Addington meeting in August, and he should now go on to win in the better classes. He is onlv a six-year-old and is a full brother to that good mare LightningLady.
High Class Hack: Stony Broke made his record two wins in two starts at the Wanganui meeting when he won the Moutoa Handicap on Saturday. This Inflation four-year-old is trained by J. Boyd, and he looks likely to make his mark this season. On Saturday he was four lengths clear at the straight entrance and he won by five lengths, full of running. Derryogue: Dtrryogue, on his running at Wanganui, is about due for another win. On the first day the daughter of Foxlight made up ground in the last few furlongs to finish sixth, and on the second, after covering a lot of extra ground on the home turn, she got up for third, a length away from Royal Greek, who was beaten by a nose by Lord Theio. With slight improvement, Derryogue should have another turn.
Finished Fast: Grey Salute drew attention to future prospects with a fast finishing run into fourth place in the Higgie Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday last. The Theio horse was not well placed early, and was well back at the home turn, but he passed a lot of horses in the run home. The winner, Black Plato, a six-year-old by Plato—Peg Black, led all the way and was never seriously challenged. On the first day he was never near the front.
Michael: The winner of the Apprentices’ Handicap at Wanganui last Saturday took the lead after a furlong or two and won comfortably, confirming his form of the first day when he ran second to Dymondy. Michael is a three-year-old colt by Broiefort from Grand Lady and is trained for hi.s owner, Mr A. Hurley, by Benge and Callahan. The favourite in this race, Montosorrie, failed to reproduce his first day’s form and finished ninth, never being near the leaders. Successful Trip: South Island trotting men have frequently found Epsom a happy hunting ground and Saturday last was no exception, for Nightbeam, Emulous and Firewater won races and each was also placed. Nightbeam, trained by C. S. Donald, is at the top of her form. She might have won the principal event if she, had been closer to the winner, Medical Student as they reached the straight, for after giving him three lengths two furlongs from home the Jack Potts-Horotane mare finished strongly to get to within half a length of Medical Student. Then in the final event she won comfortaoly from Black Label and War Guard. The dam of Night Beam, Horotane, raced successfully on the Victoria Park track some years ago. Proposed Regulations: The New Zealand Trotting Association have asked interested parties to consider two regulations which it is proposed to put into operation on January 1. They are: (1) Except with the special permission of the association, no horse of the age of six years or over shall be registered, and no horse whose sire or dam is unregistered shall be registered; (2) if a horse has not been placed in a race before it reaches the age of 10 years it shall not be allowed to start in future races. The proposals were discussed at a recent meeting of the New Zealand Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, and after consideration it was decided that it was ton big a subject to be decided at the meeting and that all district asociations be notified of the pending regulations, and that their opinions be brought before the annual meeting on November 5.
