SOLDIER TOURISTS

BUYING WAVEIN EIRE LONDON, Sept. 5. American and other Allied troops on leave in Eire are buying articles so quickly that in a few months shops will be sold out. Shopkeepers will have plenty of money, but little chance of replacing stocks. Soldiers are buying expensive watches, of which Eire appears to have unlimited supplies, and trinkets for wives and sweethearts. Dublin has dozens of shops, in addition to ordinary jewellers, which are asking the Irish to open their jewellery caskets and sell unwanted articles while the market is at its peak. This market is being encouraged, because it brings dollars to Eire. Nobody worries about the inflation it has caused, believing that the country is able to support it on the import of about £ 14 million annually from Britain in remittances sent home by workers.
