BATTLE OF BRITAIN

sth ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMME (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) LONDON, September 14. On the eve of the filth anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Group Captain A. G. Malan, writing: in the ‘■Daily Express,” says that before the Battle of Britain the Royal Air Force was reinforced by new blood which included the finest the Empire could produce. “There were such men as Bill Compton, the New Zealander, then a sergeant pilot, and Johnny Checketts, another New Zealander, who both fought brilliantly in Normandy,” adds Group Captain Malan. “So did ‘Hawk-eye’ Wells, the man who could see an enemy plane minutes before his pals.” Part ol" to-morrow’s celebration of the anniversary will be a flight by 25 squadrons of Royal Air Force fighters across London, led by a small formation of pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain. They will include the New Zealanders, Wing Commander E. P. Wells and Squadron Leader R. Bt'sh. Wing Commander A. C. Deere will not take part because of pressure of duties as commander of a station near Braintree. He is marrying Miss Joan Fenton, of Harrogate, on September 18 and will leave for New Zealand at the end of the month.
