RETIRING ADMIRALS NEW YORK, September 13. The “Herald-Tribune’s” Washington correspondent says: Legislation will be introduced in both Houses oi Congress on Saturday for the lowering of the compulsory retirement age for those in the Navy from 64 years to 60 years. This would force the immediate retirement of Admiral King, who is 66. Admiral Nimitz, who is 60, Admiral Leahy, who is 70, and Admiral Halsey, who is 62. Admiral Kimmel is reported to have informed Mr Forrestal (Navy Secretary) that he does not desire a general court-martial whilst the Congressional investigation of Pearl Harbour is in progress.

GRANT TO UNRRA WASHINGTON, September 13. Mr Lehman told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that UNRRA was racing against time in order to save hundreds of thousands of people in devastated Europe from starvation and epidemics. He gave evidence in support of Congress making a grant of 1,300,000,000 dollars to the UNRRA. Such a grant is proposed as an appropriation. Mr Lehman said his organisation could operate until the end of this year if it were given 550,000,000 dollars, which has been authorised but has not yet been appropriated from an original 1,300,000,000 dollars Congress authorisation. The UNRRA mission is at present in France buying army surplus stocks, which would be moved to the Balkans and Eastern Europe before the snows. The mission had 150,000,000 dollars to spend, but much of the army surpluses would be lost if additional money were not obtained. Mr Lehman defended UNRRA against criticism, saying it was now in full swing. . ACTOR’S PILOTLESS PLANE (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 14. The Hollywood film actor Reginald Denny, revealed that he was the inventor of a pilotless radio-controlled plane used for the training of aerial and ack-ack gunners. His plant was producing 40 per day when the war ended.

TUBERCULOSIS GERM (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LOS ANGELES, September 14. Doctor Anthony Salle, assistant professor of bacteriology at the University of California, announced the discovery of a bacillus extract known’as subtilin, which will kill tuberculosis bacilli.
