MILK ZONING

[to the EDITOR.I Sir, —In yesterday’s “Star” mention is made regarding milk zoning at Greymouth “if negotiations nowproceeding are finalised.” This matter has been before Wanganui householders and a vote taken declared in favour of the present system. At Westport the Borough Council, at its meeting this month, dealt with the suggested change. A decision not to proceed with the formation of a milk committee requiring the licensing of vendors and introduction of a zoning scheme, as suggested by the Milk Marketing Division, was carried unanimously, The Milk _ Act, 1944, required the Council to license vendors and introduce zoning,’ and also stressed the need of an assistant to the inspector, a small laboratory for testing purposes, and a secretary. A levy of l-8d per gallon of milk sold was proposed to meet administration expenditure, which it was considered would be absolutely inadequate. It was ascertained also that the matter was not compulsory. The Mayor of Westport said it was evident the scheme was going to cost a lot of money, and with the present satisfactory supply he did not favour going ahead with the committee. The Council decided to drop the scheme. Milk is a food the less it is handled the better, and, I think, the present system has been satisfactory, without risking a costly experiment.—Yours, etc., A. G. GUNN.
