WIFE ARRESTED

HUSBAND’S HEAD INJURIES NELSON, September 7. As the result of a shooting incident at Hope last Friday, when a married man, Keith Douglas Webby, was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital, with head injuries, his wife. Corona Effie Webby, aged 30, was arrested at Hope yesterday, on a charge of the attempted murder of her husband. The arrest was made by Senior Sergeant H. E. Knight and Detective W. B. Parish. Webby is a market gardener with two children. He was taken to the Richmond Police Station about 7 o’clock last Friday morning, and then brought to the hospital. No statement was then made about the cause of the injuries, but the police immediately commenced investigations, which culminated in the arrest yesterday. Webby was discharged from hospital yesterday. A charge of attempted murder of her husband, brought against Corona Effie Webby, came before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, this morning. Senior Sergeant Knight represented the police, and Mr Ott accused. At the request* of the

police a remand till next Friday was granted. Counsel for accused made a request for accused to be allowed out on bail, but the police opposed the request. The Magistrate: Why? Is it for the protection of some witness? The Senior Sergeant: Yes. Mr Ott said the accused and two children had been living with her father since the occurrence. He submitted there was no danger of absconding. The Magistrate said he could see that, but it might be a potential danger to the husband or children. He asked the Senior Sergeant what reason he had for suspecting the children might be in danger. The Senior Sergeant replied that there were allegations of poisoning. This a serious charge, and no doubt the accused now realised her position. If she got back into the same environment he could give no protection to her or others. The Magistrate said he was afraid he could not take the risk of granting bail. When he had heard the case he might be able to grant counsel’s request.
