ADDINGTON MARKET
• CATTLE YARDING HEAVY. Fat sheep was the only section to show any easing in price at Addington stock market yesterday, the drop being from 2/- to 3/- a head. Fat cattle opened at prices a shade better than last week, for the primer classes, but the- big entry brought about an easing later. Baconers and choppers increased. The yarding of store sheep showed the effects of the weather but met with a sound demand, especially for wethers, one pen of which made 32/4. Other pens ranged from 25/9 to 27/6. A small pen of two-tooth ewes in lamb made 30/-, but the remainder were of cull class, and sold as low as from 8/- to 9/-. One small pen of ewe hoggets made 25/9, and one of wethers 22/6. The. fat lamb entry was of mixed quality, but prime and lighter weight lambs all" sold well. Values were: Extra prime lambs, 41/- to 46/7; prime, 31/1 to 37/1; medium. 25/1 to 29/1; and light, 19/- to 21/4. The fat sheep yarding increased from 3000 to 4500, and comprised a large number of prime wethers and ewes. The demand for all classes was strong, and West Coast butchers operated freely. However, the increased yarding resulted in a drop of 2/- to 3/- a head. Values were: Extra prime wethers, to 56/1. Prime wethers, 45/- to 51/-. Prime me-dium-weight wethers, 35/- to 43/4. Light wethers, to 32/-. Extra prime young ewes, to 49/7. Prime aged ewes. 39/1 to 42/7. Medium ewes, 24/- to 30/7. Light ewes, to 21/-. The fat cattle entry was again heavy, and quality was generally better. Apart from some pens of outstanding quality the sale was inclined to be patchy, and towards the end the market was slow. Among the leading sales was one by W. A. Jamieson, of Koiterangi, of 8 steers at £l7/17/6 to £lB/17/6. Values were: Extra prime steers, to £27 17/6. Prime steers, £l9/10/- to £22. Prime medium-weight steers. £ll to £l5. Extra prime heifers, to £l7 17/6. Prime heifers, £l2/5/- to £l4. Medium heifers, £9 to £ll 10/-. Extra prime cows, to £l4 17/6. Prime cows, £9/10/- to £l2 5/-. Medium cows, £7/10/- to £8 15/-. Inferior cows, £5 to £7. The vealer entry was small and below requirements, but the sale was sound on the improved rates of last week: Values were: Large vealers. £6/18/6 to £ll/8/6. others, £5/3/6 to £6/16/-. Best suckers, £5/13/6 to £7/18/6; medium, £3/18/6 to £5 16/-. Large calves, 58/- to 78/-; medium, 38/- to 56/-: small and rough, 12/- to 36/-. With a few exceptions the store cattle section was made up with cows of mixed colours in poor to ordinary condition, and there was little to interest graziers. A few Chatham bullocks sold at £9/7/6, and a pen of five cows at £5/3/6, the best of the other cows making to £6/18/6. A dairy bull sold at £l5/1/-.
The entry in the dairy section was mostly of inferior quality; with a few good sorts. For the‘better class values were on a par with the lower rates of last week, but other sorts were harder to sell. Best heifers made from £l3 to £l6, with two sales at £l9 and £23; good average heifers from £9 to £l2/10/-; small and-unattractive, £5/10/- . to £8 10/-. Best second, third and fourth calvers sold from £l3 ‘to £l7; good medium cows, £9/10/- to £l2/10/-; aged and inferior, late calvers and
cows in profit, £5 to £9. Good quality pigs comprised most of the porker yarding and the market was sound throughout, last week’s prices being fully maintained. Chopper prices appreciated by £1 a head and baconers also advanced by 4/- to 5/- a head. Values were: Light porlrcrs. 47/6 to 54/6; medium. 59/6 to £3/9/6; heavy, £3/13/6 to £4/3/6; choppers. £7/18/6 to £l6 3/6. Light baconers, £4/12/6 to £4 19/6; medium, £5/6/6 to £5/17/6; heavy, £5/19/6 to £6/4/6; extra heavy. £6/9/6 to £6/19/6; average price per lb, 9d to 9fd. The store pig yarding was larger than foi’ some lime, and values were better by 3/- to 4/-. Sows in pig were in rather low’ condition and sold at from £8 to £lO/5/-. Values were: Small weaners. 16/- to 25/-: best, 28/- to 35/-. Slips, 36/- to 39/-. Small stores, 40/- to 44/-; large. 45/- to 50/-.
