Reefton Owner: Mr A. T. Lester, of Reef ton is the new owner of Kaffir Prince, an 11-year-old trotter by Peter JVloko from Wee Patch.
Riccarton Tracks: Unless some change in the weather causes a thawing in the next few days, the Riccarton tracks are not likely to be available until well into next week. This means that horses being prepared for the South Canterbury and Grand National meetings will not be able to get any fast work or schooling for at least a week, and their exercise will have to be confined to the roads or to the sand track, which has been cleared of snow, and which was in general use yesterday. Some North Island horses have arrived, including Spirillum and Abdicate, and the latter has «one on to Washdyke to be trained by E. J. Ellis until after the Grand National meeting.
Winning Owners: The list of winning owners in New Zealand for the season just closing, compiled by the New Zealand Racing Conference Official Calendar, is headed by the Dunedin owner Mr., S. Taylor, with £6698, the bulk of which was won by First In. The Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson are second with £6045, and Mr. W. E. Hazlett and estate J. S. Hazlett are next with £5295. Since August last there have been 292 outright favourites at cue lour Sydney courses. Sixty-six have won and another four dead-heated lor first, 66 (including a dead-heat) have finished second, and 43 'including a dead-heat) third. 01 the 311 ,'on the four Melbourne courses 89 have won, 41 have been second, and 47 third. j . ... For an investment of £1 straightout at starting prices on each outright favourite in Sydney backers are losing £76/3/- since the season began. Of the 47 meetings held, they have won at only 14. Backers have won at 21 of the 49 meetings held in Melbourne, but are losing £l7/15/- for the season. All favourites failed at eight meetings in Sydney, and six in iMelbourne. Of. the eight courses, backers are winning only at one— Moonee Valley. . Of the winning favourites in Sydney. six have started at odds on, two at even money, 18 between 5 —4 and 7—4, seven at 2—l. 20 at 9—4 and 5 g, ]3 at 3—l and 7—2, and four have started at odds-on in Melbourne, two at even money, 26 between 9—-4 and 11 —4, 14 at 3 —l and 7—2, and eight at 4—l or longer. Forty-two favourites quoted at odds of under 2—l have been beaten in Sydney and 38 in Melbourne.
