HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

[OUR OWN CORRESPONUENT.] HOKITIKA, June 21. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided over the following members: Crs. A. C. Armstrong, D. Pettigrew, I. J. Preston, L. S. Ross, S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, W. H. Stopforth and H. C. Peart. Financial statement: Receipts £697 12/5, expenditure £737/5/3. Accounts amounting to £l2OO/19/2 were passed for payment. The Foreman’s report was read and approved. The Sexton reported 10 interments for the month. Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for the month of May amounted to 12 cows, 15 heifers, 99 bullocks, 183 sheep, 20 lambs, six pigs, 14 calves. Condemned: one sheep, one pig. Fees collected for the month amounted to £B6/7/8, as against £79/7/11 for the corresponding month last year. On the motion of Cr. Havill it was decided to obtain the services of Professor Campbell to examine and report on the new pipe line from Lake Kanieri. It was resolved to pipe the Bealey Street watercourse, the owners of the properties through which it passes being prepared to contribute to the cost. Only one tender was received for painting the pavilion and boiler house on Cass Square, that of Messrs J. R. Lawrence, for £B7.—Deferred for three months. Two tenders were received for the purchase of drays and equipment.—That of the Westland Racing club for £3O was accepted. Cr. Peart reported on the work of the sub-committee set up to investigate a rubbish collection service. It was decided to hold a general clean up of dry rubbish at six months’ intervals. The sub-committee was authorised to organise the clean up weeks. It was decided to accept an offer of Kanieri Electric Ltd. for a week’s trial of two and a half times increased candlepower of street lights in the business area.

It was resolved to approach the Railways Department with a view to improved lighting of railway approaches and crossings. It was resolved to open an account with the Hokitika Savings Bank for the purpose of administering the monies received from the Butler bequest. CORRESPONDENCE The Medical Officer of Health Christchurch, advised that the Government Analyst had reported that a sample of water taken from the Hokitika Borough water supply on May 1 is of reasonably satisfactory chemical quality. _ , The Secretary of the Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote expressing appreciation of assistance given by the Council in the preparation of tree sites in Weld Street, and asking for further co-operation, in the matter of the Pioneer Memorial site. The Association suggests that the trellis work and seat at the Pioneer Memorial be painted and also directs the Council’s attention ro the undesirable practice of dumping ashes along the public highway m Stafford Street—Painting approved. The Secretary of Returned Services’ Association, Hokitika, wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the undecipherable state of the lettering of the names on the War Memoorial in Cass Square.—Left to Clerk* and Mayor to arrange. Mr J. P,. Sare applied for permission to erect shed on the south part of Municipal Reserve No. 446 Livingstone and Stafford Streets, over which he has grazing rights.—Granted. Mr R. P. Davies applied for permission to instal a septic tank on section 141, Stafford Street.—Approved subject to Health regulations. Miss Eva Berendt applied lor permission to instal a septic tank on sections 610-12, Weld Street.— Approved subject to Health regulations. Mr J. B. Ruthven applied, lor permission to subdivide section 114 a, Hall Street, Hokitika, into two parts, Lot 1 containing 15.5 perches with a frontage of 91 links to Hall Street, and Lot 2 containing 25.5 perches with a frontage of 15.9 links to HaL Street, and 100 links to Hampden Street. —Approved. < Mr R G Dav, 59 Tudor Street,I notified that the footpath on the; Tudor Street side 01. his frontage needs immediate attention, as it hassubsided in several places along tnc Nnce line, and it is dangerous to. pedestrians at night.-Referred to,foreman for attention.
