MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, May 17. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor .(Mr. A. R. Elcock), Crs. W. H. St°pt'orth, L. S. Ross, S. G. Roberts, D. Pettigrew, I. J. Preston, A. C. Armstrong, S. G. Havill, H. C. Peart. Financial statement: C ?IR! S £659/1/1, expenditure £B2l/5/1. Accounts amounting to £7af/J/<’ were passed for payment.. , Inward correspondence included: — Mr. J. Hewer and others complaining of neglect of duty by the Poundkeeper.—Council had complete confidence in the Poundkeeper. Mr. W. D. Patterson . and others asking permission to hold open air Gospel meetings on Friday nights at the corner of Weld and Revell Streets, being the site formerly occupied by the Salvation Army.—Granted. Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board (1) Expressing thanks to the Council for attending to the lighting of the subsidence at the foot of Revell Street, and stating that the Boaro will refund all such costs to the Council in respect of the lighting until the repairs are completed. (2) Suggesting that as Gibson Quay, at the intersection of Revell Street, is verv narrow, that the Council consider the purchase of the sections owned by Mr. Woods for the purpose of widening the road and making the turn into'Revell Street wider anc, safer. Miss Eva Berendt, Weld Street, stating that it is desired to instal a septic tank, but owing to the nature of the soil it is not possible to instal a shaft. Applicant asks whether the Council would lower the pipes in the street drain so as to enable the household drain and the septic tank to connect therewith.—Referred to Works Committee.

Mr. P. R. Whitford, Dalton Street, asking for a load of gravel on the approach to his property in Dalton Street, and also portion of the road to the racecourse requires gravel— Referred to Works Committee.

Mrs, M. Delbridgc, application for permission to instal a septic tank at Section 841, Sale Street. —Granted, subject to usual conditions.

Mr. J. Duncan, builder, application for permission to erect a suspension verandah in front of Truman’s draper’s shop, corner Weld and Tancrcd Streets. —Granted.

Inspector Housing Construction, Christchurch, asking whether Council would consider accepting the sum of £l5O for Section 1108, Davie Street, and Ros. 557, between Davie and Rolleston Streets, the property concerned containing an area of three roods, and also intimating that the Land Purchase Officer would be in Hokitika to make a preliminary investigation into the whole of the vacant portion of M.R. 492 (Whitcombe Square).—Offer accepted. Council offered to co-operate with the Housing Department with regard to Whitcornbe Square. It was decided to suggest to the Department that the Council was prepared to forego general rates if the land already held in Weld and Hoffman Streets should be opened up and built on. From Excelsior String Band applying for permission to hold a Sunday night concert, part proceeds to be divided between local Patriotic and Red Cross funds. —Granted, programme not to commence before 8.15 p.m.

From R. Watson, Rolleston Street, asking for attention to foothpath.— Referred to Works Committee.

From Mrs. Cuttance asking for removal of two gum trees on reserve. Hoffman Street. —Referred to Foreman and Cr. Roberts.

Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for month of April amounted to 18 cows, 29 heifers, 65 bullocks, 220 sheep, 51 lambs, four pigs, 12 calves. Condemned, one cow. one pig. Fees collected for April amounted to £B5 16/6; fees for corresponding month last year, £7B/2/2. Crs. Havill and Armstrong were appointed to investigate the preparation of Cass Square and for planting of the hedge around it. The Foreman’s report was approved. The Sexton renorted six indejments during April. uJ? It was resolved to apply for five men under No. 13 Scheme for a further 13 weeks.

A request from the Beautifying Association for assistance in the preparation of ground for tree planting in some of the streets was referred to the Chairman of Works and Chairman of Reserves.

Cr. Havill was appointed to represent the Borough on the Westland Hospital Board in place- of the late Mr. F. K. Hunt. On the recommendation of the Health Inspector. Mr. McEwan, it was resolved to instigate a campaign against rats in the Borough.
