HOKITIKA. April 27

The Mayor, Mr A. R. Elcock, presided over a public meeting last evening in the Princess Theatre, when Mr Aigic, M.P. lor Remuera, addressed an attendance of about 200. Mr Algie spoke on much the same lines as he clid in Greymouth, and received an attentive hearing. Later those present were entertained with relTshments in the Soldiers’ Hall. During Wednesday night’s storm which was one of the greatest known in Hokitika, some damage’was caused to property. Messrs Trumans Ltd. and Wm. Jeffries and Co. had windows blown in. Light poles were blown over, wireless masts and fences knocked over, and gardens suffered severely. The Hokitika Harbour Board met yesterday afternoon. In the absence of the Chairman (Mr M. H. Houston) Mr W. H. Stopi’orth was voted to the chair. Present: Messrs G. Howe, P. Preston (sen.-L H. Harvey, W. J. Richards, and. the secretary, Mr r.. W. Heenan. , A report was received on the worx carried out on the wharf erosion by the Public Works Department, but as yet no report had been received from the Department as to what further plans were to be carried out. It was decided that in connection with the section of GXson's Quay which is closed to traffic, the matter be discussed with the Borough Council.
