CHINESE CASUALTIES
CHUNGKING, April 26. General Chen Cheng, Chinese War Minister, has estimated that Chinese casualties from the outbreak of the war in July, 1937, until March, 1J45, have totalled 3,100,000. Discussing the present Japanese offensive, which is aimed at Chihkiang, the Minister said the enemy would be halted. BRITAIN’S MANPOWER. RUGBY, April 26. Sir Godfrey Ince, Director-General of Manpower at the Ministry of Labour said to-day: “In the matter of reallocation, re-settlement and re-con-version we can claim our plans are ready. H V Day comes to-morrow we are ready and prepared to meet the strain.” Sir Godfrey said that during the next 12 months they would be opening training centres to raise the building trade labour force from the present 350,000 to 1,250,000. Men and women would also have to be trained for 40 other industries. One of the first tasks would be to get as many married women as possible back to their homes. They had been the heroines of the war running homes and doing a great job of work in factories.
