GAOL FOR THEFT WELLINGTON, February 7. Two employees of the Wellington Harbour Board, William John Jones, aged 55, crane attendant, and Ernest Alfred Hutchison, aged 68, a waterman, were to-day each sentenced to a month’s hard labour for the then of a five gallon drum of linseed oil.,
£2OOO DAMAGES AWARDED. CHRISTCHURCH, February 7. The sum of £2OOO general damages was*awarded by a jury in the Supreme Court this evening to a student teacher who was injured in a collision with a taxi on July 24, 1943, when cycling in Latimer Square.'Plaintiff had claimed £2500 general damages, and special damages amounting to £740/5/6 had been agreed upon. » Plaintiff was Natalie Patricia Simpson and defendants were Gold Band Taxis, Ltd., andj William John White, taxi driver. The case was heard before Mr. Justice Northcroft. After a retirement of four, hours the jury returned a majority: verdict and found that the defendant' White was negligent in failing to keep a proper lookout. By 10 to 2 the jury decided that there was no contributory negligence by the plaintiff. The award of the sum of £2OOO general damages was made by a majority of 11 to one.
