MUTTON’S GOOD SALE

Beef and mutton values . were steady at yesterday’s Addington
Market, though prime wethers and young ewes maintained last week's rise. Beef sales were irregular, with a general decline of 20/- a head. Store sheep met with a good demand. The store sheep entry was 4747. but the quality of lambs offering was below standard, though prices were maintained. A good line of mixed sex lambs sold up to 27/-. Medium ewes made from 18/- to 21/3, and a line of half-bred wethers sold well at 26/2, while Romney wethers made frpm 24/9 to 25/6. The fat lamb entry was smaller than last week, and the quality, was poorer, though there was an all-round demand. There was no decline in values, which were: Heavy lambs
32/1 to 35/7; prime lambs, 27/1, to 30/1; medium and light, 24/1 to 26/7. In the yarding of 4000 fat. sheep there again was a short supply, of wethers, and these sold at prices often better than last week. The bulk of the ewes went to the freezing companies. Values were: Extra prime wethers, .to 46/4; prime wethers, 40/7 to 43/1; medium-weight wethers, 32/4 to 37/-; light, to 32/7; prime young ewes, to 2.7/7; prime ewes, 23/1 to 25/10; lignt, to 17/-. . The penning of 568 fat cattle included an excellent showing of prime medium-weight and heavy-weight steers, while cows of fair to good quality were also numerous. The market opened at about 20/- a head cheaper than last week, for all classes except medium prime steers, but these were also easier. On the average the- decline was near 20/-. Sales'included 1 W. A. Jamieson, Koiterangi, 15 steers at ,C 18/12/6 to £22 12/6,‘ and Williams Bros., Weheka, three heifers at £l6/7/6 to £lB 12/6, five steens at £lB/12/6 lo £2l 17/6. Values were: Extra prime steers. £2O to £23/2/6; prime steers,
£lB/5/- io £l9/15/-; prime medium-weight steers, £l7/5/- to £lB/10/-; ordinary steers, £l4/10/to £l6; extra prime heifers, to £lB 12/6; prime heifers, £l3 to £l4/7/6; medium heifers, £ll to £l2/10/-: prime cows, £lO/15/- to £l2/5/-: medium cows, £9 to £lO/5/-; light cows, to £B. The entry of vealers 'was smaller i than last week, and the easing in lvalues that took place then was fully recovered to a shade better. Good ciuality sold well. Values were; Large vealers, £6/11/- to £lO/1/-; others £4/13/6 to £6/3/6; prime suckers £5/3/6 to £7/6/-, medium £4/1/to £5/1/-; large calves, 54/- to 76/-, medium 38/- to 52/-; small and rough, 10/- to 35/-. There was a small entry of store cattle and the attraction was a line of Shorthorn steers in moderate condition. For those there was free competition, and they sold up to £9 12/6. The remainder of the entry comprised odd pens of cows, which ranged' about, recent values. A pen of 10 steers in forward store condition made £ll/18/6. Of seventy head of dairy cattle penned, the majority was of ordinary quality, though a few good sorts were included. Competition was dull. Best second and third calvers made from £ll to £l5, with one exception at £l7/10/-, good average sorts £8 to £lO/10/-, others, including low-conditioned, aged, and unattractive sorts, £5 to £7/10/-. Best heifers made from £l4 to £l7, good £lO to £l3, others £6/10/- to £9 10/-. The yarding of porkers was a large one, and the sale sound, ail classes • I being sold at prices fully up to last [week’s rates. Choppers were yarded in large numbers. Buyers reduced their limits by from 20/- to 30/- a head. The bacon entry was one of the largest of the season, and competition was not as keen as last week, values being easier all round by approximately 5/- a head. Values were: Light porkers, 53/6 to 59/6, medium £3/3/6 to £3/10/6, heavy £3/13/6 to £4/6/6; choppers, £4/18/6 to £9 8/6: light baconers, £4/9/6 to £4 17/6, medium £4/19/6 to £5/3/6, heavy £5/6/6 to £5/12/6, extra heavy £514/6 to £6/4/6; average price per lb B|d to 9d. ( The store pig entry consisted practically of medium and large stores Values eased by from 2/- to'3/- a head. Values were: Small weaners 20/- to 25/-, best 26/- to 29/-: small stores 35/- to 38/-, medium 40/- to 45/-, large up to 54/-.
