CLOSING FOR DURATION

WASHINGTON. December 23. With Presidential approval, the Director of War Mobilisation, Mr. James Byrnes, urged the managements ot‘ all racecourses to close the tracks by January 3. 1945. He said the war situation, demandeci that manpower transport now being used for race meetings should be applied to essential purposes. The managements are being urged not to resume racing on all tracks until war conditions permit. Mr. Byrnes also asked the War Production Board to take steps if necessary to prevent the use of critical materials, services, and transport in operating racecourses. “I am confident that track managements will act promptly without the necessity of recourse to other measures. Winter racing is in progress in Florida, California, West Virginia, and Louisiana. Track managements throughout the country have indicated their willingness to accede to the Government’s request. Racing has had a record betting and attendance season in 1944.
