PRISONER OF WAR

LIEUT. E. D. MABIN, NELSON Mr and Mrs E. B. Mabin, of Nelson (formerly of Greymouth) re- ' ceived a cablegram advising them that their son. Lieut. E. D. Mabin, who is a prisoner of war in Germany, had passed part 1 of a banking examination for which he had studied and sat while in the prison camp (says the “Nelson Mail”). The subjects taken were banking, bookkeeping and English composition. The Prisoner of War Department of the British Red Cross, who advised Lieut. Mabin’s parents, commented in the cablegram that the result of the examination was most commendable as it had been achieved under very difficult circumstances. Four sons of the Mabin family have given service overseas in this war, and two of these are now prisoners of war. Sapper Victor G. Mabin, who was a volunteer with the A.1.F., was taken prisoner at Singapore and is now in a prison camp in Thailand, and Lieut. E. D. (Eru) Mabin was captured three years ago at Sidi Rezegh, and after imprisonment in Italy was transferred to Germany where he is now in Oflag VA. E/A. Douglas B. Mabin is an engine-room artificer on H.M.S. Gambia and was recently at home on leave; and Lieut. A. E. (Peter) Mabin is in the Fleet Air Arm, and after a period of service in India -is at present an instructor in England.
