RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. December 16: Waipa. December 16: Otaki Maori.

TROTTING. Dec. 26:—Ashburton. Dec. 26:—Gore. Dec. 26:—Westport.

Reminder: Greymouth J.C. nominations close at nine o’clock to-night. K. Thomson Injured: Night Pal smashed a hurdle when he fell in a school with Lucky Jack at Riccarton on Wednesday. His rider, K Thomson, suffered injuries to a collarbone, it being his second similar accident in the last few months.

Wiggins’• Mount: According to a northern report H. N. Wiggins will ride Merry May in the Auckland Cup. She was second last yeai- with 7.2. and now has 7.4. Merry May is a solid stayer, and at her last start she was third to Lou Rosa and Marble Fox in the'Mitchelson Cup.

Speedy Youngster: Paganini, having his second race, made a good impression in the two-year-old event at Woodville, leading all the way and winning handily by a length from Duplicity, a half-sister, by Solicitor General, to Wardress. Paganini is by Lang Bian from the Australian-bred mare, Silver Strand, whose earlier progeny included the speedy sprinter, Koi Ragi.

Wellington Cup: The Wellington Cup to be run in January will have a stake of £5OOO. Again it will be restricted to -horses which have won a race of the value of £350 or more, or races of the collective value of £5OO or more to the winner. In' the event of the acceptors exceeding the safety number of 29, the field will be reduced as follows:—(1) Aged horses which have not won a flat race for 12 months before the date of acceptance; (2) horses which have not won a fiat race of the value of £5OO to the winner or races' of the collective value of £750; (3) by sectional ballot.

Smart Pacer: One of the improving pacers seen at the recent trotting meetings at Claudelands was Ngaire’s Pal, who in four starts recorded two firsts, a second and a third for £315. Little was known of Ngaire’s Pal before his successes, but the manner in which he raced suggests that he may go on paying his way. It is in his favour that he begins smartly, makes no mistakes, and is courageous. Ngaire’s Pal is by Triumph, from Motumaoho, a mare named after the locality in which Ngaire’s Pal is trained by his owner, G. A. Baker. Motumaoho, who was by Peter Moko from Lady Heiress, by Bell Boy from Heiress, was sparingly raced about 14 years ago, but she did not meet with success. She was an unhoppled trotter, as was Lady Heiress.

Imported: A recent arrival in New Zealand is the grey stallion Pherozshah, a half-brother by Pharos, to the Derby winner Mahmoud Pherozshah was imported by New Zealand Bloodstock Ltd., and has joined Robin Goodfellow and Theio at the Flaxmere Stud, Hastings. Pherozshah was bred by the Aga Khan and was foaled in France in February, 1934. but did his racing in England, where he won the Cork and Orrery Stakes at Ascot. Pherozshah went to the stud in 1938, and in England in the 194142 season he had three winners, Eric’s Folly, Greyladies and Night Bomber. He represents the Bend Or line, which is dominant in England, and is by the same sire as Nearco. His dam, Mah Mahal, is by Gainsborough from Mumtaz Mahal, Khan Bahadar, Mah Iran, Mirza 11., Badruddin, Furrokh Siyar, Fair Trial and Nizami are members of the same family. GREY-WESTLAND MEETING The Greymouth-Westland meeting will now be held at Greymbuth on January 13, the Trotting Conference having granted the Club’s application for the change from January 20. The Secretary of the Greymouth Trotting Club (Mr W. E. Pring) said to-day that members of committee felt strong indignation at the action of the Trotting Conference in granting January 20 to the Forbury Park Trotting Club for a patriotic meeting, The date had been allotted to Greymouth for the Westland meeting at the start of the season. Members felt, he said, that the smaller clubs were being pushed aside in favour of the bigger centres. The total stakes being offered for the Westland meeting are £1,600. The stake for the President’s Handicap will be £l6O, and that for the Ross Handicap £lBO.
