Mr. F. S. B. Dawson, Traffic Inspector, Railways Department, Greymouth, who is a patient in the Grey Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily.

A London cablegram stated that Air Marshal Sir Leigh-Mallory and his wife are presumed to have died on November 15 in an air crash when en route to South-east Asia.

Miss M. E. A. Appleby, of-Welling-ton, who will replace Miss A. Vaughan • as supervisor, Telephone Exchange, Greymouth, is to take up duties on January 5.

Mr. R. McMillan, Drill Superintendent, Mines Department, Greymouth, returned yesterday to Greymouth after a four-months’ official visit to the United States.

Because of ill-health Mr. Noel M. P. Gibson, who has'been headmaster of Dilworth School, Auckland, for the last 30 years, will retire from the position when the school year ends to-day.

Mr. Robert Cecil Silver, M.A. (Glasgow), senior lecturer in French language and literature in the University of Glasgow, has been appointed to the chair of modern languages at the University of Otago, in succession to the late Professor G. E. Thompson. He is aged 44, and has studied and lectured in Glasgow and Paris. —P.A.

The following teaching appointments in West Coast schools were confirmed by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday:—Greymouth, Miss Z. M. Hyndman, Miss E. M. Paul; Paroa, Mr H. F.S. Silcock; Te Kinga, Miss E. A. Schwebe. The following resignations were accepted:—Dobson, Miss E. G.,Hayes; Ross, Miss N. M. Ridley.

Miss M. McGlashan tendered her resignation from the position of assistant Librarian at the Greymouth Municioal Library to the Greymouth Borough Council last evening, because of her appointment to the Country Library Service seconded to the Greymouth Library. The resignation was accepted, to take effect aftei’ the arrival of the recently appointed Chief Librarian, Miss J. McLaughlin, early in the New Year.

The title of Honourable is to be retained by Mr David Wilson, former Leader o£ the Legislative Council and Minister of Manpower, and now New Zealand Minister to Canada, who served for more than three years as a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand. A notification that His Majesty the King has approved his retention of this title is published in last night’s Gazette. —P.A.
