BOXING
REFEREE’S REPLY TO CAULTAIJX BRISBANE, December 13. Replying to the New Zealand boxer, Vic Caultaux, who claimed that his fight against the brilliant Queensland welterweight, Tommy Burns, at Brisbane last Friday night, should not have been stopped, the referee, Mr. Pat Hill, said to-day: “I have refereed more than 7000 fights, and it is against my grain to allow .anyone to take too much punishment.” Burns gained the decision over Caltaux by a technical knock-out in five rounds.
“Caltaux put up a game, but hopeless showing.” Mr. Hill said. “He did not win a single round, and he had taken severe punishment in each of the five rounds.” When the fight was stopped Caltaux was in a hopeless condition, in his own corner, and he was receiving terrific punishment from Burns, The New Zealander’s
face was bruised and battered, and Mr. Hill thought the punishment was too much for anyone to take, so he stopped the fight. The statement by Caltaux that the Australian, welterv/eight champion, Vic Patrick, would knock out Burns in five rounds has found little support from any part of Australia. The consensus of opinion is that Burns would certainly extend Patrick to the limit, and might even defeat him. Caltaux’s next fight will be at Melbourne, probably against Jackie Daniels. The New Zealander’s two losing fights against Patrick and Burns have brought him about £BOO. Though plucky, his displays against these class opponents have been of poor calibre.’
