Road fatalities, in which motor-ve-hicles were involved, totalled 12 m October. An additional death was that of a child, struck by a school bus in the school-grounds. The list consisted of four pedestrians, three cyclists, five occupants of motor-vehicles and one pillion-rider. In proportion to population the death-rate was about the same for the North Island (8) as for the South (5). The old superstition about the number 13 had no support in the October list. The 13th fell on a Friday, which had a clean sheet. There were two fatalities on the 12th and two on the 14th.
