The Mayor (Mr W. Stewart) presided at the montjiiy meeting of the Kumara Borough Council. There were also present: Crs H. Hamer. J F. Gilbert, F .Rudkin, W. J. Benv'on C. Evendon, G. Malcolmson, W. J McNabb, and C. Haines. Before commencing ' the business of the meeting the Mayor made reference to the death of Mr A. B. Spiers, who had been Mayor almost continuously for the last 21 years, and had been an estimable citizen. He moved a vote cl' condolence to deceased’s relations. The resolution was carried in silence, all 'members standing. Authority for proposed maintenance expenditure (£57) on the Zigzag Road up to the end of the year was received from the Main Highways Board. Mr E. F. Evans, Public Works Engineer, forwarded a report of inspection of portion of highway near the Taramakau Bridge, which is threatening to slip into the river, and advising that in his opinion no permanent solution to the trouble is possible, and offering assistance if necessary for keeping the road open. Replies were received from the Minister in Charge of Civil Aviation and Mr O’Brien regarding the Kumara ’drome site.—Resolved that application be made to the Government for a complete and independent survey, the report received not being considered correct. The Postmaster-General advised alterations to the mail service,. but regretting no alteration could be made to the telephone exchange service.—Resolved that in view of the importance to sawmillers particularly to get in touch with the Railway before 9 a.m., another application be made to have the telephone exchange opened at 8.30 a.m. Inspector J. McEwan reported on sanitary inspection for the past three months, and advising that a temporary- license has been granted Westland Talkies Ltd. to use the hall owned by Mr J, Murphy. The District Manpower Officer granting the extension of authority to employ four full-time and two men part time, but advising that no increase in the amount of subsidy can be approved. The report of the Chairman of the Works Committee was received.— Resolved that the public pound be repaired. Accounts amounting to £l4l 7/11 were passed for payment.
