RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. November 11: Napier Park. November 11: Avondale.

TROTTING.

Nov. 11:—Metropolitan

Haughty and the Record: Haughty s attempt on the mile record of 1.59 2-5 at Addington to-morrow assures the greatest interest being taken in the Metropolitan Club’s meeting for while the mare is now the public idol she has already recorded 2.0 2-5 for the distance in a match race against Gold Bar who, in another race against time, did 1.59 3-5. D. C. Watts will drive a horse to accompany Haughty,, but in no way must this horse be regarded as a pacemaker. Haughty is a brilliant pacer and under good conditions and from a flying start she may be quite capable of doing better than two minutes.

A Fine Record: Maurice Holmes, who will drive the probable favourite, Slavonic, in the New Zealand Derby to-morrow, has established a great record as a driver in this race. He has driven six winners in Wrackler. Arethusa, Giro, Adlershot, Imperial Jade and Scottish Lady. F. G. Holmes with Daphne de Oro and Bonny Bridge, R. B. Berry (Parisienne and Pacing Power), M. B. Edwards (War Buoy and Gamble) and J. Bryce, junr. (Double Great and Two’s Loose) have each won the race twice. The record for the race is held by War Buoy, who in 1933 recorded 3.16 1-5. The Melbourne Cup will be run at Flemington to-morrow, when a field ‘of 25 will go to the cost. There are only two New Zealand-bred candidates, Taramoa and Saint Warden, and neither has been mentioned as well fancied in pre-race discussions. The favourites at the last quotation available were Lawrence and Claudette, both of whom have been coupled for fortunes with the Caulfield Cup winner, Counsel. Another fancied candidate, stated to have been supported for £40,000, is the Sydney mare, Cream Puff, while the success of Sirius in the Hotham Handicap has brought him into favour for he is bred on staying lines (by Enfield from North Star), and he finished (well at the end of the mile and three-quarters of the Hotham Handicap. Second to Sirius was Peter, a son of the double Melbourne Cup winner. Peter Pan. who succeeded in 1932 and 1934. LAWRENCE UNLIKELY STARTER (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, November 10. Everything points to this year's Melbourne Cup field being well below average strength. Form suggests that the top-weight, Lawrence, is Victoria’s outstanding horse, but there is a doubt about his starting. He was injured in a race a fortnight ago and has had no solid preparation since. Lawrence has long been the pre-post favourite. Popular picks now are: Sirius, Claudette. MartialLaw, Peter, Mayfowl, and the Derby winner, San Martin. The weather forecast is for fine weather on Saturday, and the going is expected to be perfect.
