Mr and Mrs A. H. Nightingale left, this morning, lor Christchnurch.
Rev. M. A. McDowell, of Christchurch, Senior Youth Director of the Methodist Church, will arrive in Greymouth, this evening. He will visit Hokitika on Tuesday.
Guests at Revingtons Hotel include: Mr. and Mrs. R. Taplin, Mr. G. F. Francis, Mr. R. Smith (Christchurch), Mr. R. V. Snowden, Mr. M. Ryrie, Mr. J. Meads (Nelson).
Captain E. R. Chivers and Mrs. Chivers, of Fiji, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Chivers. Captain Chivers served' in the Pacific operations with the Fiji commando battalion.
The death occurred in the Westland Hospital, on Thursday, of Mr. Andrew Aitken, of Hokitika, at the age of 73 years. A carpenter by trade, he was a native of Southland. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, one son, four stepsons and three stepdaughters, the latter including Mrs. A. Jolly, of Dobson. Mr. D. Aitken, of Dobson, is a stepson.

Advice has been received of the award of the United States Distinguished Service Medal to Air Vice larshal R. V. Goddard, who was Chief of Air Staff in New Zealand between 1941 and 1943. The decoration is for “distinguished and exceptionally meritorious service” while in command of the R.N.Z.A.F. Air Vice-Marshal Goddard is now serving in India. —P.A.
Mr. M. H. Houston has been appointed manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank. Mr. Houston has been in business at Hokitika for many years as an auctioneer, shipping and commission agent, auditor and public accountant. On the death of Mr. D. J. Evans early this year, Mr. Houston was appointed president of the trustees of the bank. Mr. J. A. Murdoch has now been appointed president in succession to Mr. Houston.
Mr. Mortimer Hishon, of Invercargill. one of Southland’s early pioneers, reached his hundredth birthday today. He came to Southland 82 years ago. He was born in 1844 in County Limerick. With his parents he reached Melbourne in 1850 after a voyage lasting nine months. After some years on the goldfields he came to New Zealand. He was a waggoner for some years, and then took up farming, retiring 24 years ago.—P.A.
