Mr S. Simpson returned, yesterday, from Oamaru.

The engagement is announced of Dulcie Katherine Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Nailer of Paroa, to Leslie, youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Cook. Mr. J. Mulcare has been appointed a member of the Armed Forces Appeal Board for the West Coast, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. P. J. McLean, which has taken effect from August 31. Mr P. J. O’Regan, Deputy-member, has been filling the position in the meantime.

Mr G. G. Chisholm, who has been Stipendiary Magistrate at Greymouth for the past five years, will leave about the ,end of next’ week to take a similar appointment at Timaru, where he will replace Mr H. Morgan, S.M., who will retire at the end of the present, month. Mr Chisholm will be replaced at Greymouth by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., of Christchurch.

The death has occurred of Mr. J. S. McGrath, who was a well-known master at the Southland Boys’ High School for 37 years. He retired at the end of 1940. He was a leading football and cricket coach, and a former member of the management committee of the Southland Rugby Union. He was at one time selector and ’’coach of Southland teams. —P.A.

■ A London cablegram announced that an official bulletin stated the health of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, the last surviving child of Queen Victoria, and great aunt of the present King, for some time has been failing and has shown a marked deterioration in the last week. Her condition is now causing grave anxiety. She was born in 1857.

Mrs. -D* kJ. Laiimer U.S.A. BRONZE - STAR AUCKLAND, October 25. Lieutenant-Colonel Geoffrey T. Upton, D. 5.0., Officer Commanding a battalion of the Fiji Infantry Regiment, has been awarded the Bronze Star and Medal for “heroic achievement against the enemy on Bougainville whilst serving as commander of the battalion which successfully occupied the outpost of Ibu, 20 miles beyond the American perimeter, and constructed the Kameli strip for air supply and evacuation.” The citation of the American Commanding General Headquarters, South Pacific Command, adds: “Colonel Upton performed gallantly on numerous reconnaissance-in-force missions, ’ leading his:, battalion into strongly-held Japanese territory. Throughout the prolonged period of intense activity, he exhibited aggressive leadership, keen foresight and superior devotion to duty.” Colonel Upton was formerly on the sub-editorial staff of the “Auckland Star.”
