A Stockholm cablegram stated that it is understood the £8,500 Nobel Prize for medicine is being awarded this year to Sir Alexander Fleming, co-discoverer of penicillin.
The Governor-General has reappointed Hon J. K. Archer, of Christchurch, and Hon J. E. Duncan, of Te Awamutu, to the Legislative Council for a further term.—P.A. *
Mr. and Mrs. G. Batty left this morning for Wellington to visit their, son, L/Cpl. G. Batty, who has returned from overseas and is a hospital patient.
Mr A. E. McKenzie, of Christchurch, is acting-Registrar of the Social Security Department, Greymouth, in the absence on holiday oi Mr W. Richmond.
The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Acting-Flight Lieutenant William Bagley Smaill, formerly of Auckland, says the Air Department. He was born in Dunedin in 1912, and attended the Levin District High School. Later he farmed m the Manawatu and Auckland districts. —P.A.
Admiral Somerville has been appointed to succeed Admiral Sir Percy Noble as head of the British Admiralty Delegation in Washington. RearAdmiral G. R. Creasy has been appointed to succeed Rear-Admiral C. B. Barry as Rear-Admiral (Submarines), the latter having to retire on account of ill-health.—B.O.W.
Mr W. R. Carey was re-elected president of the South Island Motor Union in Christchurch yesterday. Otner officials elected were: Vicepresidents, Messrs P. W. Breen. C. M. Rout, and R. Wilson; executive, Mesrs D. H. Thompson, J. S. Hawkes, C. G. Curtis, F. W. Freeman, B. Falck, G. Hamilton, and R. KParker.

The death occurred at Greymouth yesterday of Mr. Eli Beardsmore, a resident of Runanga for 50 years. Deceased, a native of Lancashire, was 74 years of age and for the past four years had lived at the Old People’s Home. He is survived by his wife. The funeral took place at Karoro Cemetery this afternoon, Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducting the service.
The death occurred at Greymouth, this morning, after a brief illness, of Mrs Anne Dalton, aged 85 years. Deceased resided for the greater part oi her life in Christchurch, but for the past two years had lived with her son, Mr S. P. Dalton, at Greymouth. The funeral will take place at the Karora Cemetery on Monday morning.
