WELLINGTON, September 12. The amount subscribed to the Victory Loan to-day was £745,745, making the total to date £10,485,574. Objective percentages obtained to date are as follows: —Southland district, 51 per cent.; Auckland, 47; Taranaki, Otago, both 34; Marlborough, 30; Gisborne-East Coast, 26; Wanganui, North Otago, Manawatu, all 25; Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, both 23, Nelson, 22; Waikato-King Country, North Auckland, Westland, South Canterbury, all 21; Buller, Wairarapa, both 20; Canterbury, 19; Thames-Bay of Plenty, 18..
AIR FORCE STATIONS WELLINGTON, September 12. The Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) announced that m connection with Air Force Week of the Victory Loan campaign, which commences next Monday, Air Force stations near cities and towns will be opened to the public on Saturday afternoon, September 23. . “This is the first time since the war broke out that the public have been allowed oni Air Force stations, said the Minister, “but in view of the changed war situation which permits of some relaxation of security precautions, this will now be possible on such a special occasion. The opportunity will Ibe taken to display various Air Force activities on these stations.” , , R.N.Z.A.F. Corsairs will be seen flying in formation over Wellington next Monday at 350 miles an hour, added the Minister. These are the aircraft which have done such good work in the Pacific, and there will also be a large number of Warhawk fighters, including many which have helped to build up the War Hawks’ score of 99 Japanese aircraft destroyed. The Air Force in other centres will adapt its training and similar service activities to fit. in with the Loan campaigns also without unduly interfering with the big training programme which is ahead of the Air Force. The band of the R.N.Z.A.F. returning from a three months’ tour of the Pacific will parade in Auckland on September 20 and subsequently in Wellington. “I sincerely hope the loan will be assisted materially,” added the Minister. “Money is needed foi' keeping our Air Force abreast of developments, including new aircraft. We have still a formidable enemy to face in the Pacific, and we have reason to believe that the Japanese are conserving their air power and gathering strength for the difficult and perhaos. long struggles which lie ahead.” Mussolini tried to commit suicide
WESTLAND INVESTMENTS. In the Westland district, yesterday, £5138 was invested in the Victory Loan, bringing the total to £96,013, or 21 per cent, of the objective. Returns from the various offices yesterday were as follow: Hokitika £4200, Runanga £260, Greymouth £212, Ikamatua £l5O, Reefton £130,' Hari Hari £5O, Blackball £32, Franz Josef £4O, Otira £24, Brunnerton £l7, Jackson Bay £l5, Barry town £5, Ross £2, Waiuta £l. Total £5138. The staff of Woolworths (N.Z.) Ltd. Greymouth branch yesterday raised £ll2 above their ordinary National Savings weekly contribution. WOOL RETENTION MONIES. Advice has been received by the Westland District Victory Loan Committee from the Reserve Bank that all wool retention monies taken out in Government Stock by farmers in Westland will be credited towards the district quota of the Victory Loan, whereas, if taken out in Bonds, the district will not receive the benefit of the investment. Should farmers desire to avail themselves of this opportunity of taking Victory Stock in place of bonds, it will be necessary for the loan applications <for this stock to reach the Marketing Department by Friday morning, September 15,-otherwise bonds will be issued.
