Mr. W. Bright^of Granity, commenced duty, to-day, on the staff of the railways goods shed, Greymoutm,
Mr O’Brien, Minister of Marine, will return to Wellington to-morrow morning. Mrs O’Brien will remain in Grey mouth until Thursday.
Miss A. Vaughan, who for the last three years has been Supervisor of the Greymouth Telephone Exchange, has been appointed to a similar position at Nelson.
Mr. T. Mitchell, Postmaster at Moray Place, Dunedin, has been’ appointed Postmaster at Hokitika in succession to Mr. H. C. Rowe, who is being transferred to Petone.
Mr R H. Hyland, Stationmaster at Runanga, will leave, to-morrow, on transfer to Rangiora. Mr. J. H. Grant, of Oamaru, will arrive tomorrow to succeed him.
The funeral of the late Mrs Mary Ann Methven, of Ahaura, took place at Karoro Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Rev. C. R- Sprackett, of Reefton, conducted- the service at Sampson’s Chapel. The graveside service was conducted by Rev. T. G. Campbell.
A Canberra cablegram stated that the Governor-General (Lord Gowne) and Lady Gowrie have left Austi’alia. Until the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester, who is the Governor-General designate, the Governor of Victoiia (Sir Winston Dugan) will act as Gov-ernor-General. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are not expected until the end of the year.
The death occurred at the Grey Hospital on Saturday evenmg_oi Mr William Edward Batey, of Dobson, aped 42 years. Deceased, who had had a lengthy illness was a native of Northumberland, and came to Dobyon 16 years ago. He retn’ ed years ago on account oi ill-heaitn. He is survived by his wife and one son. The funeral took place at Karoro Cemetery, this afternoon, Captain Oja la conducting the services.
The funeral of Mrs Mary Amelia O’Brien of Nelson Creek, took place on Saturday, at Karoro Cemetery. Requiem Mass was conducted at Nelson Cieek by the Rev. Father S. O'Brien ,of Christchurch, assisted by Rev. Fathers Gregory, Brown, Galvin (Christchurch), O’Mahoney, J. Holohan, Finnerty, and Kean (Hokitika). Rev. Father Brown, assisted by the other priests, conducted the service at the graveside.
The funeral of Mr James Buchanan, of Dunollie, took place at Karoro Cemetery, on Saturday afternoon. The cortege was led by two pipers, Piper Major Boyle and Piper D. Boyle, of the Greymouth Highland Pipe Band, of which deceased was a member, and a guard of honour' was formed by the band at the graveside. Rev. W. S. Brettell conducted the services at the residence, Dunollie, and at the cemetery.
