MURDER CHARGE
WOMAN’S TRIAL OPENED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. Helen Lewis, married, aged 34, appeared in the 'Magistrate’s Court, today, charged that, on June 24, at 11a Aidwins Road, she murdered Frederick Albert Brazier, a pensioner, single, aged 60. who boarded with her. Mr. G. G Chisholm, S.M.. Greymouth, was on the Bench. Brazier was found in the back bedroom ol tlie house dead, with wounds about the face and head. A neighbour, William Alexander Harris, said that early in the morning of June 24, he heard a series of heavy thumpings coming .from Mrs. Lewis’s house, and heard Mrs. Lewis s voice, verging on hysteria, coming from inside. Mary Kerridge, married, and a sister of Mrs. Lewis, said Mrs. Lev/’.s called at her house on June 22, and was very ill. Mrs. Lewis said: “The old man” had been putting stuff m her baby’s food to try to poison the baby. On June 24 Mrs. Lewis again called. She was very upset. After some conversation Mrs. Lewis said: “I’ve murdered him.” (Proceeding.) .
