BLACKBALL AND RUNANGA WIN
Interrupted by wet weather the previous Sunday, the West Coast Rugby League’s senior competition was ‘ advanced yesterday, when Blackball defeated Marist by 63 points to 5 and Runanga defeated Ngahere by 11 points to 8. In the match at Runanga, in which Ngahere’s points all came from penalty goals, Runanga almost scored earlyf when .n Forrest crossed the line but failed io ground the ball. Shortly afterwards, however, R. Dalziel scored wide out, J. Newton failing to convert. Ngahere showed some smrit and were rewarded with two penalty kicks, both of which Howden turned to good effect. Shortly before half-time K. Martini added to Runanga’s points with a fine try alter a iTvelv sprint, Newton converting. Ngahere took the offensive early in the second spell, but a promising move was upset when J. Forrest interceoted and himself scored after taking the ball for 40 yards. Newton failed/to. convert. There was no further scoring by way of tries, but Ngahere were awarded two more penalty kicks. Howden making no mistake. Mr. L. Kinsella was referee. Blackball were superior m all aeoartments in the match at Blackball, (lie side including Wright, a former Canterbury player. Mavist’s only ooints came from a try and a penalty goal bv P. Coll. Scorers for Blackball were M. Ord (41. J. Clark (3), K. Mountford, Wright, W. Kirk (2 each). W. Williams and C. Mcßride, Nuttall converting three, C. Mountford Jive and J. McNaughton one. Mr. A. Kennedy was the' referee. In a third grade match Marist and Blackball drew. 11-all, and Brunner defeated Runanga, 9 —6.
