The good old days! Time was when you could buy a big bottle of whisky for 4/6 in N.Z., or a generous nip for 6d; a foaming tankard cost the same (a full pint, mind), and baccy was 6d an ounce! Has the increased price of the later lessened the demand? Not it! There are some things people can’t do without and tobacco is one of them. All the world over the consumption of the weed is’going up by leaps and bounds, and nowhere is this more in evidence than in Maoriland, where the toasted blends, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold and Pocket Edition, are more popular than ever. Brands may come and brands ma} 7 go, but ‘toasted’ is like the famous brook—it will go on forever! Smokers are not slow to recognise a good thing—hence the triumph achieved by “toasted.” Not only are the six toasted blends the most fragrant and comforting, but the purest and least harmful because most of the nicotine is eliminated by the toasting of the leaf.—l 99.
