NEW CALEDONIA
LECTURES TO TROOPS.
NEW CALEDONIA, June 11
Fine work has been accomplished in the past month by a team of six lecturers from New Zealand, among the New Zealand troops in New Caledonia, and the aggregate of attendances at lectures and discussions for four weeks is 27,760. This figure undoubtedly underrates the interest shown by the men because the demands of duty affected the attendances. Only in the first week were the men completely free to attend all lectures and discussions, and with the lowest daily attendance 1480, the total for that week was 1'0,060. After that the men were busily engaged in certain duties which restricted their spare time considerably, and to such an extent in the second week that-lecturers worked only four davs, instead of five. However, the total for the second wt*ek was 2945. In the third week the total was 4450, and in the fourth week 3310. The lectures have covered a wide range, three men dealing with general subjects, and three concentrating on agricultural subjects. The lectures have drawn larger attendances than discussions, but the interest taken generally shows there has been widespread appreciation of the work. Farmer-soldiers in particular have shown the most enthusiastic interest.
