GAINS IN ITALY.

LONDON, June 12.. .The Americans north-west, of Rome have broken a new line of fortifications which the Germans es--tablished between Lake Bolsena and the Tyrhennian Sea, southward to Orbetello. The Germans from this line on Sunday morning attacked and temporarily halted the Americans advancing along the coastal road, but air reconnaissance on Monday morning suggested that the enemy had withdrawn.

FIGHTING IN FINLAND

LONDON, June 12

A. Moscow communique says: Our troops in the Karelian Isthmus, north of Leningrad, to-day, overcoming enemy resistance and fortifications in wooded country intersected by lakes, continued the offensive and captured number of strong-points, including Kivinapa, 40 miles south-east of Viipuri, also Raivola and more than 30 other inhabited localities.

There were no material changes in other sectors. The capture of Raivola represents a Soviet advance of. four miles beyond Terijoki.

MORE -JAP. DEAD

SYDNEY, June 13.

American ground forces on Biak Island are still engaged iif clearing the Japanese out of strongpoints west of the captured Nokmer airfield. Patrol clashes at Maffin Bay on .the mainland, have resulted in a further 173 Japanese being killed. Bringing the total of enemy casualties in the area to 1911. At Hollandia. a further 223 Japanese have been killed, or their bodies found jn the inland escape trails. Enemy casualties Jn this sector have now risen to 4795, including 629 prisoners.
